Freight Volumes

Freight volume is one of the key parameters for calculating accurate freight rates, and required consistently among all freight carrier companies as part of the quoting process.  Irrespective of whether you are transporting your shipments by sea, air or road, the volume of your shipment will determine the way the shipment will be billed to you.

It is through a volume play that sets one business apart from another, the bigger the volume play the larger the discount one can obtain from the freight company transporting the goods.  Parcel International moves large volumes of freight and can pass on those savings to its clients, and set many on a much more even playing field.  Parcel International’s rates online make shipping very affordable for the Adhoc shippers and small to medium businesses that have low freight spend annually.

Packing to reduce freight volumes

If you have a small item, be sure to pack the item into a box with relatively reflects the size of the item.  If you decide to use extra padding and packaging that results in the box being substantially greater than the item itself, it simply means extra freight costs will be imposed to transport the goods.

Smart packing means reduced freight costs, for bulky items

Packing and dispatching orders to customers can be a fairly tricky business and requires some skill.  Packing skills which will naturally evolve and develop over time and experience.  What seems to be a simple task requires systematic approach since packaging can have a big impact on the cost of shipping goods to the customer. Once a customer order is picked and laid out in front of you, it may be wise to fetch multiple quotes using our freight calculator, using 2 or three shipping scenarios. For example sending the order out in 1 box or 2 boxes, may have a surprising result and you may discover there is an opportunity to save when you combine the 2 items, for local deliveries.  This is just one example but there are so many variables it would be difficult to list each, just rather we encourage you all to enter the various scenarios on the freight calculator.  The quoting process with Parcel International and the automatic calculation of freight volume within our smart system, will be of significant importance in reducing the time it takes to calculate the best service and pricing options.

Calculating and converting cubic weight from volume measurements

Freight volume is calculated by measuring length x width x height in metres to get cubic metres.  CBM.  Once the cubic volume has been obtained we can use another formula for calculating the conversion of cubic volume across to cubic weight.  This is done so cubic weight can be compared to actual dead weight, since whichever value is greater shall be the value used to calculated freight and shipping costs.
